The US Department of Energy has announced that it will make up to 92.5 million barrels of crude oil available for companies to borrow from its Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR). Companies can apply to take this oil from four storage sites: Bayou Choctaw, Bryan Mound, Big Hill, and West Hackberry, located along the coasts of Texas and Louisiana. Earlier, the US had already offered 126 million barrels in three rounds, but companies borrowed less than 80 million barrels, which is about 63% of the total offered. The SPR currently holds around 398 million barrels of oil, which is roughly equal to four days of global oil use. The oil will be delivered between June and August. Companies will need to return it later, with deadlines ranging from early next year up to mid-2029.
