Two top Republican lawmakers in the United States have criticised the Pentagon’s decision to reduce US troops stationed in Germany. They warned that removing 5,000 troops could weaken security in Europe and encourage Russia.
Senator Roger Wicker and Congressman Mike Rogers said the troops should be moved closer to Eastern Europe instead of leaving the region completely. They believe a strong US military presence is important to stop possible threats from Russia.
The Pentagon said the decision came after a review of military needs in Europe. President Donald Trump also said more troop cuts could happen in the future.
Germany’s Defence Minister Boris Pistorius said the move was expected but added that American troops in Germany are important for both Europe and the United States.
The US currently has more than 36,000 troops in Germany, making it America’s biggest military deployment in Europe.
