Africa’s top health agency has confirmed a new Ebola outbreak in eastern DR Congo, mainly in the towns of Mongwalu and Rwampara in Ituri province. Officials say around 246 people have been infected and 65 people have died so far. Tests have confirmed the Ebola virus in several patients, while more suspected cases are being checked. Health experts are worried because the affected areas are busy mining towns with many people traveling between DR Congo, Uganda, and South Sudan. Authorities are increasing health checks and surveillance to stop the virus from spreading further. Ebola is a dangerous virus that spreads through direct contact with bodily fluids. Early symptoms include fever, headache, muscle pain, vomiting, diarrhea, and bleeding. There is currently no guaranteed cure, and the disease can be deadly. DR Congo has faced several Ebola outbreaks before. The country’s worst outbreak between 2018 and 2020 killed nearly 2,300 people.
