Experts believe Iran is sending a message that it can influence or control ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil routes.
Analyst Musgrave said Iran may want to make its actions look internationally acceptable if it decides to increase control over traffic in the area.
He also said the timing is important because the United States recently held talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping in an effort to reduce Iran’s options and pressure Tehran diplomatically.
According to Musgrave, there was very little discussion after the US-China meeting about the situation in the Strait of Hormuz, which may have encouraged Iran to take a stronger position in the region.
The Strait of Hormuz is a key route for global oil shipments, and any tensions there could affect energy markets worldwide.
