President Donald Trump has announced that the United States will deploy 5,000 additional troops to Poland, signalling continued military cooperation between the two countries despite growing debate over America’s role in Europe. Trump made the announcement on his Truth Social platform, saying the decision was influenced by the strong relationship between Washington and Polish President Karol Nawrocki. Trump had openly supported Nawrocki during Poland’s presidential election campaign and has often praised him as a reliable ally who supports stronger ties with the United States. The announcement came only one week after the Pentagon unexpectedly cancelled a planned deployment of 4,000 US troops to Poland. At the time, the decision raised questions among European allies about whether the United States was reducing its commitment to Eastern Europe and NATO security. Trump did not explain whether the newly announced 5,000 troops are part of the earlier cancelled deployment or an entirely separate military operation. The White House has recently suggested that the United States wants to reduce its military footprint in Europe as part of Trump’s “America First” foreign policy approach. Trump has repeatedly argued that European countries should spend more on their own defence instead of depending heavily on American military support. Earlier this month, the US government also announced plans to withdraw 5,000 troops from Germany. That decision followed political disagreements between Trump and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz over the conflict involving Iran and broader Middle East tensions. Trump criticised Merz after the German leader suggested the United States had been embarrassed during negotiations with Iran. The American president strongly rejected those comments and accused some European leaders of failing to properly support US efforts to pressure Iran. It remains unclear whether the troops heading to Poland are being transferred from Germany or if they will come from another US military base. The Pentagon has not yet released detailed information about where the soldiers will be stationed, what their mission will involve, or how long they are expected to remain in Poland. The latest announcement has increased discussion about the future of NATO and America’s long-term military role in Europe. Trump has frequently criticised NATO members for not contributing enough to defence spending. He has argued for years that many European countries rely too much on US military protection while failing to meet NATO spending targets. At the same time, Poland has become one of America’s closest partners in Europe. The country has increased defence spending significantly in recent years and has strongly supported NATO’s military presence near Russia’s borders following the war in Ukraine. President Karol Nawrocki has consistently supported close cooperation with Washington and has praised Trump’s leadership on security matters. In previous interviews, Nawrocki said he believed Trump was one of the few world leaders capable of pressuring Russian President Vladimir Putin into negotiations to end the war in Ukraine. Despite Trump’s criticism of NATO and several European governments, Nawrocki has insisted that the United States remains the most important security partner for Europe. Many Polish officials believe a strong US military presence is necessary to deter possible threats from Russia. Meanwhile, foreign ministers from NATO countries are gathering in Sweden for an important summit focused on defence cooperation, regional security, and military spending. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is expected to attend the meeting and encourage European allies to take on greater responsibility for NATO operations and defence costs. Rubio recently said that Trump remains disappointed with some NATO members because they are not contributing enough to collective defence efforts. Reports have also suggested that the US may consider reducing troop levels available for NATO missions in the future, although no final decisions have been announced. Some Republican lawmakers in the United States have criticised the administration’s decisions to withdraw troops from Germany and change deployment plans in Europe. They argue that reducing American military presence could send the wrong message to Russia during a period of high international tensions. Germany currently hosts the largest number of US troops in Europe, with more than 36,000 active-duty American personnel stationed there. Other major deployments include around 12,000 troops in Italy and about 10,000 in the United Kingdom. Trump’s latest troop announcement highlights the changing balance within NATO as the United States pushes European allies to become more independent in defence while still maintaining strong partnerships with countries like Poland.
