Israeli military forces carried out fresh incursions into southern Syria, increasing tensions in the region amid ongoing instability near the Israeli-Syrian border. According to Syria’s state news agency SANA, Israeli troops entered parts of Quneitra and Deraa provinces, where they temporarily established military checkpoints and searched civilians and vehicles before later withdrawing from the area. One of the reported operations took place along the road connecting Saida al-Golan and the al-Basali farm in Quneitra province. Witnesses said Israeli soldiers stopped civilians and inspected vehicles travelling through the area for several hours. Another operation was reported in the town of Maariya in western Deraa province, located in the Yarmouk Basin region near the border. Israeli troops reportedly set up a checkpoint at the eastern entrance of the town, where they searched private cars, public transportation vehicles, and residents passing through the area. Maariya Mayor Muwaffaq Mahmoud told Syrian media that around four Israeli military vehicles carrying approximately 150 soldiers entered the town during the operation. He said the troops positioned themselves near the local telephone exchange and carried out searches before eventually leaving the area without making any arrests. So far, the Israeli military has not officially commented on the reported incursions. Syrian authorities strongly condemned the operations and described them as violations of Syria’s sovereignty and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement signed after the Arab-Israeli conflict. Damascus has repeatedly accused Israel of carrying out military actions inside Syrian territory, including raids, arrests, air strikes, and destruction of farmland in southern Syria. The border region between Israel and Syria has remained tense for years due to ongoing regional conflicts, the presence of armed groups, and concerns over Iranian influence inside Syria. Israel has regularly conducted military strikes in Syria, saying it targets threats linked to Iran and allied armed groups operating in the country. Local residents in southern Syria say the latest operations created fear among civilians already living under difficult economic and security conditions. Many people in the region depend on farming and trade, both of which have been affected by years of conflict and military activity. The latest incursions are expected to further increase tensions between Syria and Israel at a time when the wider Middle East region is already facing growing instability linked to conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon, and regional security disputes. International observers continue to call for restraint from all sides to prevent further escalation near the border areas.
