Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu says Israel is facing serious security threats and must continue its military and political efforts against its enemies. Netanyahu said there was a significant attempt against his son, Yair Netanyahu, while Yair was in the United States. According to Netanyahu, Israeli security services acted quickly and brought additional forces from the U.S. to help evacuate his son. He blamed several journalists and others for sharing Yair’s location online in real time, including the address, apartment number, floor and photographs of the building. When asked where he would spend the holiday eve, Netanyahu refused to reveal his location, saying it was a secret. He added that Israeli authorities were monitoring something serious. Netanyahu also attacked political rival Gadi Eisenkot, saying he cannot form a government without support from Arab parties. Netanyahu argued that such a government would not be legitimate, even if it were legally possible. On the Qatar affair, Netanyahu rejected claims that Qatar had significant influence over Israel’s decisions. He said Qatar is a hostile country and pointed to Israel’s previous attacks on Qatar during the war. Netanyahu also made strong comments about Israel’s enemies. He said the main question in the elections is who will complete Israel’s military objectives against Iran, Hezbollah and Hamas. He accused his political opponents of being too weak when facing pressure from the United States. Regarding Iran, Netanyahu warned that if Iran attacks Israel, Iran would face a very powerful Israeli response. He did not provide details about what that response could involve. On Gaza, Netanyahu said there will be no major reconstruction unless Gaza is first demilitarized, meaning armed groups must give up their military capabilities. He said Israel is discussing Gaza’s future with the United States and acknowledged that the two countries do not always agree. Netanyahu said that when Israel and the U.S. have different views, he will continue to defend what he believes are Israel’s national interests.
