Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says he believes the Russia-Ukraine war could continue into the winter. His comments came after talks in Kyiv with US President Donald Trump’s envoys, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner.
The US officials travelled to Kyiv to discuss ways to end the war. They had first met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow the previous day. The meetings were part of US efforts to find a possible path toward peace between Russia and Ukraine.
The talks in Kyiv lasted several hours and took place behind closed doors. After the meeting, Witkoff said he was encouraged by the discussions and described them as important and substantive. He said the US team believed the talks had made progress.
Kushner also described the discussions as positive. He said the US team had discussed ideas that had not worked in the past and was trying to find what would be needed for a lasting peace.
However, the meetings did not produce a major breakthrough or a final peace agreement.
Zelensky said Ukraine wants a fair and lasting peace. He stressed that any agreement should prevent Russia from starting another attack in the future.
The Ukrainian president also said that officials from Ukraine, Europe and the United States would meet again soon to continue discussions about ending the conflict.
Zelensky warned that if the war continues into winter, Ukraine will need more support. He specifically mentioned air defence systems and help with energy supplies. Ukraine has faced repeated Russian missile and drone attacks on cities and important infrastructure.
The talks came as Russia and Ukraine continued to exchange attacks. Ukraine said its forces targeted a Russian oil refinery, an airfield and two air defence systems. Ukrainian officials said the oil refinery in Ryazan supplies fuel to the Russian military.
Russia also launched a large attack against Ukraine. Ukraine's Air Force said Russia used 108 long-range drones and cruise missiles. Ukrainian air defences reportedly destroyed 82 drones and six missiles, although several areas were still hit and debris fell in other locations.
Russia continues to control around one-fifth of Ukraine's territory. However, Russian ground forces have generally made slow progress in recent months while suffering heavy casualties.
Both Russia and the United States have described the Moscow talks as constructive. Russian President Putin's adviser Yuri Ushakov said the discussions were open and also included economic issues and possible future Russian-American projects.
Despite the positive statements from both sides, major disagreements remain. The future of Ukrainian territory, security guarantees and preventing another Russian attack are among the difficult issues.
For now, there is no final peace agreement. Zelensky's warning suggests Ukraine is preparing for the possibility that the fighting will continue through the coming winter while diplomatic efforts continue.
Summary
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky says the war with Russia may continue into winter after talks with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The talks were described as positive, but no major peace deal was reached. Ukraine says it will need more air defence and energy support if fighting continues.
