Former US official Mark Kimmitt says a plan by Donald Trump to free ships stuck in the Strait of Hormuz could be good for the world.
Many ships carrying fertiliser have been delayed in the Gulf due to rising tensions. This has created problems for farmers, especially because it is planting season. Kimmitt said getting these shipments moving again is very important to avoid food shortages.
He believes the US Navy may already know which ships should move first, but warned that the area is still dangerous. There are concerns about sea mines, possibly placed by Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, making travel risky.
Kimmitt also said it would be helpful if the US and Iran coordinate, so ships can safely pass through the area.
However, he added that some ships may still not move because insurance companies see the situation as too risky and may not allow them to travel.
Overall, the plan could help ease pressure on global fertiliser supply, but safety and coordination remain major concerns.
