US President Donald Trump has announced that a new agreement between the United States and Iran has been “largely negotiated” and could be finalized soon. Speaking on Saturday, Trump said the deal would include reopening the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important oil shipping routes.
Trump shared the update after speaking with leaders from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and other regional countries. He described the discussions as positive and said the countries were working toward a “Memorandum of Understanding pertaining to peace”.
The US president also revealed that he had a phone call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, which he said “went very well”. However, Trump did not provide complete details about the agreement or when it would officially be announced.
According to Trump, the final details are still being discussed between the United States, Iran, and other countries involved in the talks. He repeated that any future agreement must prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons.
Iran also confirmed that negotiations are moving forward. Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baqaei said both sides had become closer in their positions over the past week. Still, he warned that serious disagreements remain and accused the US of making mixed and contradictory statements.
Baqaei explained that Iran wants the agreement to be based on a 14-point framework. He said discussions are continuing and more talks may take place over the next 30 to 60 days before a final agreement is completed.
The recent talks come after months of tension and conflict in the Middle East. In February, the US and Israel launched large military strikes on Iran, leading to attacks across the region. Iran responded with strikes on Israel and US-allied countries in the Gulf.
A ceasefire was reached in early April, opening the door for diplomatic talks between Washington and Tehran. Since then, both sides have been trying to negotiate a long-term peace agreement.
At the same time, tensions remain high around the Strait of Hormuz. The US has maintained a blockade on Iranian ports since April 13. US Central Command said it has redirected more than 100 ships and blocked trade with Iranian ports, increasing economic pressure on Tehran.
Iran has also claimed military control over parts of the Strait of Hormuz and said ships passing through the area must coordinate with Iranian authorities. The US and its Gulf allies have rejected those claims and told international ships not to follow Iran’s rules.
Despite ongoing tensions, the latest statements from both Washington and Tehran suggest that diplomacy may still lead to a broader peace agreement in the region.
Summary
US President Donald Trump says a major agreement with Iran is close to being finalized. The proposed deal could reopen the Strait of Hormuz and reduce tensions in the Middle East. Iran confirmed talks are progressing but warned that important issues still remain unresolved.
