A Russian drone struck an apartment building in the Romanian city of Galati during overnight attacks near the Ukraine border. The drone exploded after hitting the building, causing a fire on the 10th floor and forcing around 70 residents to evacuate.
Romanian emergency services said two people suffered minor injuries and received medical treatment. Firefighters quickly controlled the blaze.
Romania’s defence ministry said the drone entered Romanian airspace during Russian attacks on nearby Ukrainian areas. Two F-16 fighter jets were sent to monitor the situation before the drone crashed.
Romanian officials strongly condemned the incident, calling it a “serious and irresponsible escalation” by Russia. The government also informed NATO and requested faster delivery of anti-drone defence systems.
Since the war in Ukraine began in 2022, drone debris has landed in Romania many times, but this is the first known case where Romanian civilians were injured. Russia has not yet commented on the incident.
