Russian forces are increasing pressure on the eastern Ukrainian city of Kostyantynivka, a location that military experts consider highly important in the battle for the Donbas region. According to Ukrainian soldiers and military officials, Russian troops have managed to enter parts of the city and are attempting to surround it from multiple directions. Kostyantynivka serves as a key gateway to the remaining Ukrainian-controlled areas of Donbas. If Russia gains full control of the city, it could open a path toward larger cities such as Kramatorsk and Sloviansk. These cities are among Ukraine’s last major strongholds in eastern Ukraine. Capturing them would bring Russia closer to achieving one of its long-standing objectives in the war: complete control of the Donbas region. Ukrainian commanders publicly state that the situation remains under control. Brigadier General Oleksandr Bakulin, who oversees the defense of the area, said Russian forces have not achieved a major breakthrough. However, he acknowledged that around 130 Russian soldiers are still operating inside the city. Soldiers on the ground describe a more difficult situation. Some Ukrainian troops say Russian soldiers have infiltrated urban areas and are hiding inside buildings and residential neighborhoods. This makes it extremely challenging to identify and remove them. One Ukrainian drone operator explained that Russian troops are moving into areas behind Ukrainian defensive lines, creating confusion and forcing Ukrainian units to constantly adjust their positions. The urban environment gives Russian troops several advantages. Damaged buildings provide cover, while summer vegetation and trees make it easier for soldiers to move without being detected. As a result, Russian forces can slowly advance even in areas heavily monitored by Ukrainian drones. Drone warfare has become one of the most important parts of the battle. Ukrainian drone teams play a crucial role in detecting enemy movements and directing attacks. However, Ukrainian soldiers say Russian drone operators are increasingly targeting Ukrainian drone launch sites. This strategy limits Ukraine’s ability to monitor Russian advances and protect its positions. According to Ukrainian soldiers, Russian forces often use artillery, rocket systems, and aircraft to support their attacks. Meanwhile, Russian drone operators focus on finding and disrupting Ukrainian surveillance and reconnaissance teams. This combination of tactics has allowed Russian troops to slowly gain ground despite facing strong resistance. Ukrainian soldiers also report shortages of personnel and equipment. Some troops say they are exhausted after months of continuous fighting. Others claim they have not received enough reinforcements to replace losses suffered in combat. These challenges have made it harder for Ukraine to maintain defensive positions and launch counterattacks. Although Russian advances have been slow, they have been steady. One Ukrainian officer noted that Russian troops sometimes gain only about 100 meters in a day. In some cases, soldiers reportedly crawl from building to building to avoid detection. Despite the slow pace, these gradual gains have increased pressure on Ukrainian defenders. Military analysts say Russia is using a strategy similar to previous operations in eastern Ukraine. Instead of launching a direct assault on the city center, Russian forces are advancing along the flanks to cut supply routes and gradually encircle the city. This method has been used successfully by Russia in other battles and can force defenders to withdraw even if they continue holding parts of the city. At the same time, Ukraine has been carrying out long-range attacks deep inside Russian-controlled territory. Ukrainian strikes have targeted oil facilities, supply routes, and infrastructure supporting Russian military operations. These attacks have reportedly contributed to fuel shortages in Russian-occupied Crimea and disrupted logistics networks. Some observers believe Russia wants a quick victory in Kostyantynivka to offset the impact of Ukraine’s successful attacks on Russian infrastructure. Capturing the city would provide Moscow with a significant military and political achievement. The situation inside Kostyantynivka has been described by some Ukrainian soldiers as a major crisis. Delivering supplies to frontline positions has become increasingly difficult because roads are under constant threat from drones and artillery. Even large cargo drones used for logistics are reportedly being intercepted. The Ukrainian military monitoring project DeepState has warned that the fall of Kostyantynivka could be only a matter of time if current trends continue. The group says losing the city would make military logistics in the region much more complicated and could place nearby cities at greater risk. Despite these concerns, Ukrainian forces continue to resist. Soldiers remain engaged in fierce urban combat and are trying to slow Russian advances. Many believe that improving drone operations and targeting Russian logistics networks will be essential if Ukraine hopes to hold the city. As fighting continues, Kostyantynivka has become one of the most important battlegrounds in eastern Ukraine. The outcome of the battle could significantly influence the future course of the war in the Donbas region and determine how much territory each side controls in the months ahead.
