Russia carried out one of its biggest missile and drone attacks on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, during the night, leaving at least eight people dead and many others injured. According to Ukrainian officials, several children were among the victims. The attack caused heavy destruction across different parts of the city and forced many residents to spend the night in underground shelters. Explosions were heard across Kyiv as Russian forces launched drones, cruise missiles, and ballistic missiles at the city. Air defense systems worked throughout the night to intercept many of the incoming weapons, but several missiles and drones still hit their targets. The attacks damaged residential buildings, hotels, parked vehicles, and important civilian infrastructure. Large fires broke out in different districts, and firefighters worked for hours to control the flames. Images from the city showed destroyed buildings, damaged roads, burning cars, and large craters created by the explosions. One ambulance station was also damaged during the attack, leaving at least one person in critical condition. Emergency crews rushed to rescue people trapped inside damaged buildings while medical teams treated the injured. Kyiv's military administration said Russia deliberately targeted civilian areas instead of military sites. Officials described the attack as another attempt to spread fear among the Ukrainian population by striking homes and public buildings. Ukraine's ambassador to the United States, Olha Stefanishyna, said residents were forced to stay in bomb shelters throughout the night while explosions continued across the city. She added that several neighborhoods suffered damage to homes and public infrastructure. The attack came only hours after Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky warned that intelligence reports suggested Russia was preparing a major strike. Because of this information, Zelensky shortened his visit to Dublin and urged Ukrainians to remain alert and protect their families. He said Russia had been preparing the large-scale attack for some time. This was the first major missile and drone assault on Kyiv in more than two weeks. Although Russia has continued launching attacks across Ukraine, this strike was one of the largest in recent days. As the attack unfolded, neighboring Poland activated its fighter jets to protect its airspace. Polish military officials described the move as a preventive measure because of the fighting taking place close to the country's border. There were no reports of Russian weapons entering Polish territory. Poland is a member of NATO, the military alliance made up of countries from Europe and North America. The alliance closely monitors military activity near its borders, especially when large attacks happen close to member states. The fighting on the battlefield also continues in eastern Ukraine. Russian forces have recently advanced toward the city of Kostyantynivka, an important Ukrainian defensive position in the Donbas region. If Russia captures the city, it could improve its position for further operations in eastern Ukraine. At the same time, Ukrainian military commanders say their forces have regained more territory this year than they have lost. They also claim to have disrupted Russian supply routes connecting the Russian border with occupied Crimea, making it more difficult for Russian troops to move equipment and supplies. Despite these claims, the front lines have changed very little over recent months. Both Russian and Ukrainian forces remain heavily fortified, and the war has become largely a battle of artillery, drones, missiles, and long-range strikes. Russia currently controls about one-fifth of Ukraine's territory, much of which was captured during the early months of the full-scale invasion that began in February 2022. Since then, the conflict has caused widespread destruction, displaced millions of people, and resulted in heavy military and civilian casualties. The latest attack on Kyiv highlights that civilians remain at serious risk as the war continues. Families across the city once again had to seek shelter while emergency workers responded to fires, rescued survivors, and searched damaged buildings. International attention remains focused on the conflict as both sides continue military operations. Ukraine continues to call for stronger international support, while Russia maintains its military campaign. With no immediate sign of peace negotiations, large-scale missile and drone attacks remain a constant threat to cities across Ukraine. The overnight assault on Kyiv serves as another reminder that the war continues to have a devastating impact on ordinary people, with civilians, homes, and public infrastructure suffering the consequences of ongoing fighting.
