Russia and Ukraine have carried out another large exchange of missile and drone attacks, with both sides targeting areas far from the main battlefield.
Ukrainian officials say Russian attacks overnight killed at least five people and injured dozens of others. Several parts of Ukraine were hit by missiles and drones, causing fires and damage to buildings.
The capital, Kyiv, was among the areas targeted. Russian missiles and drones hit a market in the city, starting a large fire. Emergency workers were sent to the area to control the flames and search for possible victims.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko said at least six people were injured in the capital, including a child. Air-raid sirens sounded several times during the night and continued into Sunday morning as more Russian drones were reported moving toward the city.
Firefighters worked for hours to put out fires caused by the attacks. Images from Kyiv showed damaged buildings, burned shops and debris spread across the ground. Emergency workers also took breaks while continuing their work at the damaged market.
Other parts of Ukraine were also hit.
In Kryvyi Rih, a 44-year-old man who had been reported missing was found dead under rubble. In Zaporizhzhia, two people in their 60s were killed when their house was destroyed.
Another person was killed and 14 workers at a steel plant were injured. Russia said the plant was involved in producing parts for weapons.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the attacks on Kyiv came in several rounds during the night and into the morning. Ukrainian officials said their air defenses managed to shoot down three Russian missiles and nearly 100 drones.
Russia also said it had targeted several facilities connected to Ukraine's military activities. Russian officials claimed they struck a facility producing parts for Ukrainian missiles and a factory making drone components.
Russia also said it attacked an oil refinery in the Poltava region, claiming that the refinery supplies fuel to the Ukrainian military. Moscow further claimed that a dry cargo ship near Odesa was carrying military equipment when it was attacked.
While Russia was attacking Ukraine, Ukraine launched a major drone attack toward Moscow and the surrounding region.
Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said about 600 Ukrainian drones were launched toward the Russian capital overnight. Russian authorities said many of the drones were intercepted before reaching their targets.
The governor of the Moscow region described the attack as one of the largest drone attacks in recent memory.
However, some drones reportedly caused damage. A warehouse belonging to Wildberries, one of Russia's biggest online retailers, caught fire at an industrial park near Moscow.
Workers were forced to leave the building as firefighters responded to the blaze.
Ukraine has targeted Wildberries warehouses in recent weeks. Ukrainian officials claim that some of the company's facilities are being used as logistics centers connected to Russian military supplies.
Russia has rejected those claims and says the online retailer is not being used to supply its military. However, military-related products and equipment are available through the company's platform.
The latest attacks come after several weeks of increasingly intense fighting. Both Russia and Ukraine have been using large numbers of drones and missiles to attack military, industrial and infrastructure targets.
Ukraine has also been carrying out long-range drone attacks against Russian oil facilities and other important locations. Kyiv says these attacks are aimed at reducing Russia's ability to support its military operations.
Russia has responded with its own large-scale missile and drone strikes against Ukrainian cities and infrastructure.
The repeated attacks are causing deaths, injuries and damage on both sides. They also show that the conflict is continuing to expand beyond the immediate front lines.
For people living in Kyiv, Moscow and other affected areas, the latest attacks have brought renewed fear and uncertainty. Air-raid warnings, explosions, fires and damaged buildings have become a regular part of life during the war.
The latest exchange of attacks suggests that neither side is reducing its military operations. Instead, Russia and Ukraine continue to use drones and missiles to strike targets deep inside each other's territory.
Summary
Russia launched a major wave of missile and drone attacks across Ukraine, killing at least five people and injuring many others. Ukraine also carried out a large drone attack on Moscow, where hundreds of drones were reportedly intercepted and a Wildberries warehouse caught fire. The latest attacks show that the conflict between Russia and Ukraine is becoming more intense.
