At least 12 people were killed and 34 others were injured after a major Russian attack struck Kyiv overnight on August 20, 2026. The attack was one of the latest large-scale strikes against the Ukrainian capital during the ongoing war between Russia and Ukraine.
The strikes began around midnight, when air-raid sirens warned people across Kyiv to take shelter. Ukrainian officials said around 20 Russian missiles hit or were aimed at the capital during the attack. Several areas of the city were damaged.
Apartment buildings and warehouses were hit, while a school and a children's hospital also suffered damage. Fires broke out in different parts of Kyiv, including at a warehouse. Emergency workers were sent to damaged areas to search for victims, put out fires and help people affected by the attack.
The strikes also caused power cuts, leaving thousands of homes and other properties without electricity. Many residents spent the night hiding in underground parking areas and other shelters while explosions could be heard across the city.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said the number of deaths was linked to a shortage of air-defence missiles. Ukraine depends heavily on weapons supplied by Western countries to protect its cities from Russian missiles and drones. Zelensky warned that Russia would continue attacking as long as Ukraine does not have enough systems to defend itself.
Russia's Defence Ministry said it had used weapons launched from the air, land and sea to attack Ukrainian military facilities and warehouses. Russia also claimed that hundreds of Ukrainian drones had been destroyed.
The violence was not limited to Kyiv. In the wider Kyiv region, one person was killed and seven were injured in attacks in the Brovary and Boryspil districts. Another person was killed and 11 injured in Ukraine's Donetsk region.
The attack also affected neighbouring countries. Romania said a drone crossed into its territory near the Ukrainian border before crashing in an uninhabited area. Poland said it launched defensive air operations to protect its airspace.
Russia and Ukraine have both increased their long-range attacks in recent weeks. Ukraine has carried out strikes deep inside Russia, including a large drone attack targeting Moscow. Russian officials have also reported deadly attacks inside Russia.
Despite the continuing attacks, efforts to reach a ceasefire have made little progress. Both Russia and Ukraine accuse each other of attacking civilians.
The war began with Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. More than four years later, fighting and long-range attacks continue, while millions of people remain affected by the conflict.
Summary

Ukrainian officials say the country is struggling with a shortage of air-defence missiles needed to stop Russian attacks.
