At least 16 people have been killed after a devastating Russian drone attack on a busy shopping centre in Kryvyi Rih, Ukraine. Around 130 people were injured, while four others are still missing as rescue teams continue searching through the destroyed building. The attack happened on Friday when two drones hit the shopping centre within a short period of time. The second drone reportedly struck after the first attack had already caused major damage and started a huge fire. This type of attack is often called a double-tap strike because a second attack happens shortly after the first, putting rescuers and emergency workers at risk. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky strongly condemned the attack, calling it “cynical and despicable.” He said the second strike targeted the area after emergency workers had arrived to help victims. Kryvyi Rih is also Zelensky's hometown. The attack caused massive destruction. A huge fire spread across about 9,000 square metres before firefighters finally managed to bring it under control. Rescue workers are now carefully searching through the rubble for survivors and missing people. Officials said the operation could continue for another two days because of the scale of the destruction and the risk of further attacks. Rescue teams from seven other Ukrainian regions were sent to help. Specially trained psychologists were also deployed to support survivors and families affected by the tragedy. Officials said 52 injured people, including 14 children, were still being treated in hospitals. Many victims have required surgery because of serious injuries. A day of mourning has also been declared across the Dnipropetrovsk region. The attack on Kryvyi Rih came during another night of heavy fighting between Russia and Ukraine. Zelensky said Russian missiles and drones struck several parts of Ukraine, damaging homes and civilian infrastructure. Ukraine also carried out attacks inside Russia overnight. Russian officials said at least four people were killed in Ukrainian attacks, including two children. Ukraine said it had also struck an oil refinery in Russia's Samara region, causing a fire. The war between Russia and Ukraine has continued since Russia launched its full-scale invasion in February 2022. Both countries continue to carry out drone and missile attacks, causing deaths, injuries and major destruction. As the search continues in Kryvyi Rih, families are waiting for news about their missing loved ones. The deadly attack has once again shown the terrible impact of the ongoing war on ordinary civilians.
