Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has accused Russian President Vladimir Putin of wanting to continue the war in Ukraine.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine’s intelligence, along with information from its international partners, shows that Putin is still pushing for more fighting. He said Russia’s leadership does not appear ready to stop the war despite growing support among ordinary Russians for ending the conflict.
“Unfortunately, all the intel – both ours and our partners’ – and all the signals from Russia indicate that the Russian leader personally wants more war,” Zelenskyy said.
According to Zelenskyy, many people in Russia would now accept a stop to the fighting along the current line of contact, meaning the existing front line between Russian and Ukrainian forces.
He argued that the Russian government’s position is different from what many people inside the country may want. Zelenskyy suggested that Moscow could take steps toward ending the conflict but is instead choosing to continue military operations.
The comments come as international efforts continue to find a possible path toward peace. Ukraine has repeatedly called for security guarantees and a lasting peace agreement, while Russia has maintained its own demands for resolving the conflict.
Zelenskyy’s statement highlights the major disagreement between Kyiv and Moscow over how the war should end. Ukraine wants an agreement that provides lasting security and protects its sovereignty, while Russia has sought conditions that Ukraine and its allies have strongly opposed.
The war has continued despite repeated diplomatic efforts and international calls for a peaceful solution. Zelenskyy said the latest intelligence gives Ukraine little reason to believe that Russia’s leadership is currently prepared to end the fighting.
For Ukraine, the key challenge remains finding a way to stop the war while ensuring that any peace deal does not simply lead to another conflict in the future.
Summary
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says intelligence from Ukraine and its allies suggests that Russian President Vladimir Putin still wants to continue the war. He said most Russians may now support stopping the fighting along the current front line.
