At least 12 people have been killed and 17 others injured in a major Russian missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, and nearby areas, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks happened overnight and caused fires and serious damage in several parts of Kyiv. Emergency teams worked through the night to rescue people and deal with the fires. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said almost 350 rescue workers were involved in the emergency response in Kyiv and the surrounding region. One of the deadliest incidents happened at a railway depot. Six of the eight people killed or injured there were workers from Ukrzaliznytsia, Ukraine's state railway company. The attack caused major damage and fires at the railway facility. Four other people were killed in the town of Boryspil, near Kyiv, after a residential building was hit. The incident has raised further concerns about the danger faced by civilians during Russia's continuing attacks on Ukraine. Zelensky said Russia used a large number of drones and ballistic missiles during the latest attack. He also said that eight other Ukrainian regions were targeted. An Indian national was reportedly among the casualties. Russia's military confirmed that it had carried out what it described as a "massive strike." Moscow said its forces targeted military-industrial and fuel-energy facilities in Ukraine. Russia has repeatedly said that its attacks are aimed at military and strategic targets, while Ukrainian officials have reported civilian deaths and damage to homes and other civilian infrastructure. The latest attack comes only days after another deadly Russian strike in the Kyiv region. On Friday, Russian attacks reportedly hit a weapons depot, killing 38 people and causing stored shells, mines and drones to explode. Hundreds of people were also evacuated from the area because of the danger. The repeated attacks show that the war remains highly dangerous for people living in and around Kyiv, more than four years after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022. There have also been attacks involving Ukraine and Russia near their borders. In Russia's western Belgorod region, one person was reportedly killed in Ukrainian strikes, according to the region's acting governor. The latest violence comes as international pressure continues for an end to the war. On Monday, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to end the conflict. Modi said that every day the war continues causes further harm to humanity. India has maintained close economic relations with Russia and is an important buyer of Russian oil, much of which is sold at discounted prices. Despite diplomatic efforts and calls for peace, fighting between Russia and Ukraine continues, with missile and drone attacks causing deaths and destruction on both sides. For civilians in Kyiv and other affected areas, the latest strikes have once again brought the dangers of the war directly into their homes, workplaces and communities.
