Russia has reportedly carried out drone attacks near airports in Kyiv at a sensitive time, just as US officials were preparing to travel to Ukraine for talks.
The reported strikes happened near two airports in the Ukrainian capital, including Zhulyany Airport, which is located inside the city. According to reports, a drone hit two old Soviet-era aircraft at the airport. The aircraft were reportedly not being used for normal passenger flights.
The timing of the attack has attracted attention because US special envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were expected to travel to Kyiv after meetings in Moscow. The two US representatives have been involved in diplomatic efforts aimed at finding a possible way to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
A Ukrainian lawmaker said the US envoys had been close to reaching an agreement to land at Boryspil Airport, Kyiv’s main international airport. However, the reported attacks and continuing security risks could make flying into Kyiv too dangerous.
Instead, the American representatives are expected to use a train to travel from Poland or another safe location into Ukraine and then continue to Kyiv.
Witkoff and Kushner arrived in Moscow on September 5 for talks with Russian officials. Their meetings are part of wider diplomatic efforts involving the United States, Russia and Ukraine.
They are still expected to visit Kyiv on September 6 and meet Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
The reported attacks have added another challenge to the diplomatic mission. While the envoys are trying to discuss peace and possible steps toward ending the conflict, Russia and Ukraine continue to exchange attacks.
The situation also shows the security risks faced by foreign officials traveling inside Ukraine during the war.
For now, the focus remains on whether the US envoys can safely reach Kyiv and whether their meetings can help move peace negotiations forward.
Summary
Russia reportedly carried out drone strikes near two airports in Kyiv as US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner were preparing to travel from Moscow to Ukraine. One drone reportedly hit two old Soviet-era aircraft at Zhulyany Airport. Security concerns may force the US envoys to travel to Kyiv by train instead of flying.
