Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Ukraine has been dealing with the aftermath of a major Russian overnight attack across Kyiv and several other regions.
According to Zelenskyy, the attack involved different types of weapons, including ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, anti-ship missiles and jet-powered Shahed drones. He said the combination of weapons appeared to be designed to cause as much damage and loss of life as possible.
Kyiv and the surrounding region suffered significant damage. Residential buildings and other civilian infrastructure were hit during the attack. Zelenskyy said 10 people were injured in Kyiv, while medical teams were providing treatment to everyone who needed help.
Emergency workers also carried out rescue operations. Ukraine's State Emergency Service rescued 13 people from damaged areas. However, Zelenskyy said two people were killed in the attack. He expressed condolences to the victims' families and loved ones.
The attacks were not limited to Kyiv. Zelenskyy said critical infrastructure was damaged in the Kyiv region. In the Odesa region, a market was hit. Kharkiv was also targeted, where two people were injured and an apartment building was damaged.
In the Sumy region, a locomotive belonging to the Kyiv–Sumy train was attacked at a railway station in the morning. Zelenskyy said there were no reported casualties from that incident, while evacuation efforts were continuing.
Other strikes were reported in Zaporizhzhia and the Dnipropetrovsk region, showing the wide area affected by the overnight attack.
Zelenskyy said Ukrainian forces managed to shoot down 175 aerial targets during the night. However, he acknowledged that some weapons still reached their targets.
The Ukrainian president said Ukraine's air defenses have been performing well against cruise missiles, but ballistic missiles remain much harder to intercept. He stressed that Ukraine urgently needs additional air-defense interceptors to protect cities and civilians.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine has already discussed the issue with American and European partners. More meetings are expected with governments and companies that could help provide additional weapons and support for Ukraine's anti-ballistic defense system, known as FREYJA.
He thanked Ukraine's international partners for making air-defense support a priority. Zelenskyy said stronger air defenses are not only about military protection but also about saving civilian lives.
The latest attack comes as Ukraine continues to face frequent Russian missile and drone strikes. Ukrainian authorities are still assessing the damage and working to restore affected infrastructure while emergency teams continue rescue and recovery operations.
