Zelenskyy Highlights Differences With Trump

Zelenskyy said he and Trump were aligned on the objective of ending the war but had different views on how to reach that outcome.

He argued that his experience of growing up in the former Soviet Union gives Ukrainians a particular understanding of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Russian society.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukrainians are familiar with the political environment in Russia and the pressures faced by Russian soldiers and civilians. He also said fear of punishment can influence the actions of people serving in the Russian military.

Zelenskyy added that the United States could discuss a range of global security issues with Moscow, while Ukraine’s direct experience of Russia shaped its own assessment of the conflict.

Zelenskyy Says Ukraine Will Speak Openly

The Ukrainian president described honesty and direct communication as important elements of his approach to diplomacy.

He said Ukraine was facing significant pressure and that he would continue speaking out when he believed the country faced potential dangers.

Zelenskyy said defending Ukraine required using every available diplomatic channel while continuing to support the efforts of Ukrainian soldiers and other people working to protect the country.

He emphasized that Ukraine’s position was based on defending its national interests rather than simply aligning itself with the preferences of its partners.

Ukraine’s Digital Infrastructure and Cyber Defence

Zelenskyy also discussed Russia’s reported cyberattacks against Ukrainian data systems and digital infrastructure.

He said Ukraine had strengthened its resilience by decentralizing essential systems, helping maintain mobile phone service and internet connectivity despite repeated attacks.

According to Zelenskyy, Ukraine’s more distributed digital infrastructure has helped it withstand disruptions. He contrasted this with Russia’s more centralized systems, which he argued could be more vulnerable to certain forms of disruption.

These remarks highlight the growing importance of cyber defence and resilient communications infrastructure during the war.

Ukraine Continues to Face Air Defence Challenges

Zelenskyy said Ukraine still lacked sufficient air defence capabilities to protect all of its infrastructure against Russian attacks.

He explained that decentralization was part of a broader effort to reduce vulnerability, extending beyond data systems to other essential services.

He also maintained that Ukraine’s responses to Russian attacks were intended to follow actions taken by Moscow.

What Happens Next?

Zelenskyy’s comments underline the challenge of finding a common approach between Kyiv and Washington to ending the war. Although both leaders have expressed support for ending the conflict, differences over diplomatic strategy and security arrangements remain important issues.

Ukraine’s ability to protect its infrastructure, maintain international support and pursue diplomatic options will continue to shape its response to the ongoing conflict.
