About 30 US lawmakers from the Democratic Party have asked the government to be honest about whether Israel has nuclear weapons. They sent a letter to Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
The lawmakers said the US is working closely with Israel, but at the same time, it does not officially confirm if Israel has nuclear weapons. They believe this lack of clarity is a problem.
They explained that Congress needs full information about the situation in the Middle East, especially when it comes to nuclear weapons and the risk of war getting worse.
The Democrats also said that keeping Israel’s nuclear programme secret makes it harder to stop other countries from building nuclear weapons. They pointed out that countries like Iran may feel the need to develop such weapons because of what they think other countries have.
In the end, they asked the US government to treat Israel the same as other countries and demand transparency.
Israel is widely believed to have nuclear weapons, but it has never officially confirmed it and usually avoids talking about the issue.
