An expert from King’s College London says the US and Iran still have strong tensions with each other, but both sides also want to come out as winners in the negotiations. He explained that Iran has suffered heavily after weeks of intense fighting, so its leaders now face an important choice: continue the conflict or try to find a peaceful solution through talks. According to the expert, the best chance for progress is an agreement on Iran’s nuclear enrichment programme. Iran wants a deal that does not look like a major defeat, while the US wants to present any agreement as a success. Another difficult issue is the Strait of Hormuz, an important global oil shipping route. The expert said solving this issue may be even harder than the nuclear talks. He warned that if both sides fail to reach a workable deal, tensions could continue and fighting may start again in the future.
