Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has renewed his call for peace talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin by sending him an open letter and proposing a direct meeting. In the letter, Zelensky said that Ukraine and Russia should engage in face-to-face negotiations to find a way to end the war. He also asked for a complete ceasefire while the talks take place, saying that continued fighting only causes more suffering and loss of life. Zelensky stressed that Ukraine cannot wait for international attention to return fully to the conflict, noting that the United States is currently focused on tensions involving Iran. He argued that both countries should take action now to seek peace. The Ukrainian leader also referred to recent Ukrainian drone strikes inside Russia and claimed that Russians are becoming tired of the war, rising prices, fuel shortages, and continued attacks. He urged Putin to choose a path toward ending the conflict. The Kremlin confirmed that it had received Zelensky’s letter and said Putin would be informed about its contents. Russian officials responded by saying that Zelensky would be welcome to meet Putin in Moscow. Speaking at an economic forum in St Petersburg, Putin said he was willing to reach an agreement with Ukraine but insisted that compromises would be necessary. Russia continues to demand that Ukraine give up claims to several regions partially occupied by Russian forces and abandon its goal of joining NATO. Ukraine has repeatedly rejected these demands, arguing that giving up territory would encourage future Russian aggression. Peace talks between the two sides have taken place in several countries over the past few years, but none have produced a lasting ceasefire or peace agreement. US President Donald Trump welcomed the idea of a meeting between the two leaders, saying it would be a positive step and encouraging both sides to make compromises to end the war. Despite the new proposal, major disagreements remain between Russia and Ukraine, making a peace deal difficult. However, Zelensky’s invitation is being seen as another attempt to restart serious negotiations and bring an end to the conflict.
