Pakistan says the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement could soon expand beyond its three founding members. Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar said that around six to seven Muslim-majority countries are interested in becoming part of the defense agreement.
The agreement was signed on August 7, 2026, in Mecca by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. The three countries agreed to strengthen military cooperation and collective security. The pact says the countries will work together against acts of aggression and improve their ability to respond to security threats.
The agreement is already attracting interest from other Muslim-majority countries. Bangladesh has publicly indicated that it would consider joining positively if it receives a formal invitation from the three founding members. This makes Bangladesh one of the clearest potential future members.
Egypt is another possible addition. Türkiye's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan has indicated that Egypt could potentially become part of the agreement. However, Egypt has not formally joined the pact, and its position on membership remains an important question.
Other countries have also been discussed as possible future members, although there is no confirmed list of all six or seven interested states. Reports have mentioned countries including Syria, Iran and others, but interest does not mean that these countries have officially applied or been accepted.
The first committee meeting under the agreement is taking place in Istanbul, involving senior officials from Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye. Discussions are expected to focus on defense cooperation, coordination and future development of the agreement. The framework has been designed to allow other countries to join later.
Pakistan has presented the agreement as a defensive partnership focused on regional security and cooperation. If more countries join, the pact could become a larger security framework connecting South Asia, the Middle East and Türkiye.
For now, however, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye remain the only official members, while other countries are still considering their options.

Pakistan says six to seven Muslim-majority countries are showing interest in joining the Mecca Joint Defense Agreement. The pact was signed by Pakistan, Saudi Arabia and Türkiye on August 7. Bangladesh has publicly expressed interest, while Türkiye has suggested Egypt could also join.
