Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a strong warning to airlines, insurance companies and other businesses that continue to use Russian airspace. He said the skies over Russia are becoming increasingly dangerous because of the growing number of drone operations linked to the war with Russia.
Zelenskyy said Ukraine does not threaten civilian aviation. However, he warned that the number and reach of drones operating in Russian airspace are creating a situation that airlines must take seriously. In his words, civilian aviation and drones cannot safely share the same airspace during an active conflict.
He also warned that Russian airspace could eventually become “de facto closed” because of the continuing war. His message was directed not only at airlines but also at insurers and companies that depend on major Russian airports.
The warning comes as Ukraine has increased its long-range drone operations against targets inside Russia. Russian authorities have repeatedly reported drone threats around major cities and important infrastructure. These incidents have also caused temporary restrictions at airports and disruptions to civilian flights. In May, more than a dozen airports in southern Russia temporarily suspended operations after a drone incident affected regional air-traffic control.
Moscow has also introduced additional restrictions on some types of civilian aviation in areas around the capital because of drone threats. Some of these restrictions were introduced after large-scale drone attacks targeting Russian military and energy infrastructure.
The situation creates a difficult problem for international airlines. Even when an aircraft is not a direct target, a drone attack can lead to emergency airspace closures, flight diversions, airport shutdowns or dangerous encounters with air-defense systems.
Zelenskyy wants international aviation organizations and other bodies to understand these risks. Ukraine's Foreign Ministry is expected to brief international organizations about the growing danger.
His warning also reflects a wider change in the war. Drone attacks are no longer limited to areas close to the battlefield. Both Russia and Ukraine are using long-range drones to strike targets deep inside each other's territory.
For Ukraine, the message is clear: Russia started the war, and the continued fighting is now affecting the safety and reliability of its own airspace. Zelenskyy argues that airlines and insurers should consider these risks before continuing to operate through Russian skies.
Summary
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned airlines, insurers and companies using Russian airports that flying through Russian airspace is becoming increasingly dangerous. He says the growing number of Ukrainian drone operations means civilian aircraft could face new risks, even though Ukraine says it does not intend to target civilian aviation.
