U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has made fresh comments about both Canada’s trade dispute with the United States and Iran’s oil exports to China.
Speaking about Canada, Bessent questioned whether tariffs on Canadian goods are having a major effect on prices paid by American consumers. He said he would like to see clear statistical evidence showing the impact of the tariffs on U.S. prices.
Bessent said he was willing to debate the issue, suggesting that the economic effects of the Canadian tariffs should be measured using data rather than political arguments.
The comments come after the United States increased tariffs on some Canadian products. Recent measures have affected a smaller portion of Canadian exports, while Canada has prepared retaliatory action. Analysts have warned that tariffs can increase costs for businesses and consumers, although the final effect depends on the products involved and how companies respond.
Bessent also focused on Iran and its oil exports to China. He said there may be only about 30 million barrels of Iranian crude oil left that China has not already purchased.
According to Bessent, that remaining oil could be used up soon. He suggested that Chinese purchases of Iranian oil could then fall sharply because Iran may not have enough available oil to continue supplying the market.
China has been Iran’s most important oil customer, making the country a major focus of the U.S. pressure campaign. Washington has threatened sanctions against companies and financial institutions involved in Iranian oil transactions. The United States has also targeted Chinese-linked shipping and oil businesses accused of helping move Iranian crude.
Recent data also show that Iran’s oil exports have fallen significantly. Reuters reported that Iranian crude loadings dropped from about 2 million barrels per day in March to roughly 220,000–255,000 barrels per day in August, as restrictions disrupted shipments.
Bessent’s remarks show that Washington is using economic pressure on both trade partners and Iran as part of its broader economic strategy.
